Introduction:
This tutorial will teach you how to create a very cool looking 3d-effect that you can use to transform those boring images and photographs.
I chose to start with this image:
2. Now open a Photoshop canvas that fits the picture or you can choose the standard 800 x 600.
3. Once you place or paste the picture make a copy of it by pressing Ctrl + J. Now in your mind find the point at which the picture would look most three dimensional.
4. Once you have figured that out I want you to render out that part using Magic Eraser, Magnetic Lasso or any other tools you see that seem fit. (Do it to only one layer).
In the end you will have the following:
Before - After
Make sure you do not move the layers around, it will make the putting-together much harder.
5. Now using the rectangular marquee create a rectangle in a new layer. This will become our picture frame. Fill the frame with a whitish color and then (make sure its selected) go to Select > Modify > Contract > by 40 pixels (this depends on your picture)
6. Using the frame (you use Drop Shadow to see it clearer) as a guide, cut the second picture layer around the edges. For an added bonus you may want to Edit > Skew to put the frame on an angle like I have done.

See it's already looking great!
7. Now you might want to add a background to the whole thing that the images (especially the render) will fit into and then do some touch-ups to your photos. The following are tips.
Blur Tool
Use this to blur some of the less prominent features of the photo so that the render will stand out.
Gradient Tool
This is not common but the effect is awesome. Create a small marquee around the main plant. Then use a light color that fades to transparency.
And many more...
Anything that will make that render and that figure stand out has done its job of creating a 3d image that pops out at you.
8. Now you can also do some touch-ups to the frame, make it look older, more worn out, whatever your heart desires.
This is what I came up with:
